Portugal National Exam Scores: Scales and University Entry

Portugal's national secondary-school examinations can be relevant both to completing school qualifications and to applying for higher education. The entrance-test score uses a different scale from ordinary secondary-school grades. Interpret the actual examination result alongside the university and course requirements before comparing marks or considering another attempt.

Identify what the examination score will be used for

A national examination in Portugal can affect several decisions: it may be part of secondary-school assessment, serve as a higher-education entrance test, or have a specified role in improving a grade. These purposes follow distinct rules. The Portuguese national exam guide helps you plan preparation; the result itself should be read with its declared purpose, subject and examination phase.

Under the official General Examination Guide, entrance-test results are expressed on a 0–200 point scale, while ordinary final subject and course classifications typically use 0–20 values. A student comparing figures on the two scales must label each result clearly before using it in an application.

The entrance minimum comes from the programme

The Portuguese examination guide explains that institutions require a minimum entrance-test classification of at least 95 points on the 0–200 scale. Individual institution-and-course combinations can require a higher minimum. That minimum is a formal eligibility condition for the selected degree, whereas the eventual place allocation is based on the relevant application rules and competition.

Create a small record for each intended course showing its accepted entrance subjects, published minimum and any other relevant admission conditions. Check the current official application documentation for that course before assuming that an examination score has the same effect across institutions.

School grades, entrance grades and improvement

The national guidance distinguishes the role of a final examination in determining a subject grade from its separate use for entrance to higher education. Different curricula and assessment situations can lead to different grade calculations. Preserve the school transcript and the national examination result as separate documents; a revised examination mark might affect particular components under the relevant rules.

When checking an application, start from the original officially issued marks and follow the published conversion process for the chosen institution. Record which examination sitting and phase are associated with the result. The applicable phase rules matter when deciding how a score may be presented for admission.

Using practice results to improve

If you are retaking a subject examination, identify whether losses were concentrated in short-response precision, longer explanations or time management. Select tasks from the correct national subject syllabus and compare progress across similar practice conditions. Keep a clear distinction between practice marks and the official final result.
