CAT Scaled Scores, Section Percentiles and Admission

The Common Admission Test reports performance by section alongside an overall result. Percentile ranks summarize relative performance in the testing population, while scaled scores are used by institutions alongside academic and selection criteria. An IIM's initial eligibility conditions are separate from the score needed for actual shortlisting and final admission.

A CAT scorecard is best read as a profile of performance across reasoning areas together with the overall outcome. The CAT exam guide covers how to prepare for the tasks; interpreting the results requires you to distinguish a scaled score from its percentile rank and from the admissions calculation used by your chosen institute.

Sectional results deserve their own attention

The IIM Calcutta admission policy for CAT 2026 uses percentile information from Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), Quantitative Ability (QA), and the overall examination result. These fields help an institution assess a candidate’s performance across distinct kinds of reasoning, with section-specific expectations in its own policy.

A stronger overall percentile can coexist with a weaker section. When you review the scorecard, keep each field visible rather than reducing the performance profile to the overall result. The preparation response should also be specific: examine text interpretation in VARC, representation of information in DILR, or problem-solving steps in QA.

Scaled scores and percentiles

The IIM Calcutta admission policy assesses each candidate’s overall and sectional CAT percentiles as relative performance measures. Percentiles compare a candidate with the examination population, while the scaled score describes performance on the examination scale. Keep those two reported quantities separate when reading admission conditions.

Use the scaled score as the score measure reported for the relevant section or total. Use the percentile to understand that result’s relationship to the cohort. These values answer different questions, so keep the labels attached when comparing attempts or analysing an institute’s entry policy.

Institute shortlisting uses further criteria

Under IIM Calcutta’s stated CAT 2026 policy, first-stage eligibility looks at sectional and overall percentiles. Later stages combine CAT performance with academic records and other announced factors, then determine shortlists and final merit through the institute’s own procedure. The stated initial minimum is a screening criterion; it is separate from the threshold that the applicant pool produces for actual invitations.

A programme at another institute may use different subjects, weights and selection stages. Store the source and cycle beside every admissions comparison. Avoid transferring a threshold from a different campus or category into your own scorecard.

Act on the section pattern

Review the practice questions behind your weakest section and identify the first reasoning step that became unreliable. For DILR, it may be turning a table into relationships; for VARC, selecting textual support; for QA, choosing an efficient method. Practise the corrected step before another timed set.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CAT show sectional percentiles?

Institutes can examine Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability individually.

What does a CAT percentile compare?

It places your scaled-score performance among candidates for the relevant examination cycle.

Is a published first-stage percentile the final admission threshold?

The institute decides later shortlists through its announced selection stages and applicant pool.

Can I use an earlier cohort's cutoff as a fixed target?

Historical thresholds are useful for context, while current selection uses the receiving institute's announced procedure.
