GATE Marks, Score Conversion and Qualification
GATE reports marks from the test paper and a separately calculated examination score. Raw or normalized marks enter the conversion formula, while qualifying thresholds depend on the paper and applicable category. A scorecard has a defined validity period. Your study and admission decisions should keep these separate measures visible.

GATE results contain several measurements that serve different purposes. Your marks come from the question paper and its marking rules. The GATE score is a separate calculated result used for applications, and each test paper has its own qualifying standard. Open the GATE exam guide for practice planning, then read your official scorecard with the test-paper code and candidate category in view.
Marks from the question paper
According to the official GATE question-paper pattern, each paper carries 100 marks, including 15 marks for General Aptitude. Subject-specific papers allocate their remaining marks according to the syllabus. This total is the mark scale for the test itself, so it should be distinguished from the separately reported GATE score.
The GATE marking instructions distinguish question types. An incorrect 1-mark multiple-choice question loses 1/3 mark, while an incorrect 2-mark multiple-choice question loses 2/3 mark. Multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry zero negative marking, and multiple-select questions offer zero partial marking. Record the question type in your practice analysis because the way an error affects marks depends on that type.
How the examination score differs
The official GATE FAQ explains that a published mathematical equation converts examination marks into the GATE score. Multi-session papers use the applicable normalization procedure before score calculation. Read the marks and derived score as separately reported fields and retain your paper code for an accurate comparison.
The current GATE FAQ also explains that the formula can produce a negative GATE score even when a candidate’s marks are positive. That outcome follows the mathematical transformation used for the relevant paper. Using an online mark-to-score estimate from another subject could therefore misrepresent your own result.
Qualification, validity and admission
The GATE FAQ specifies that a GATE scorecard is valid for 3 years. The qualifying threshold depends on the test paper and candidate category, while universities and other receiving organizations publish their own selection standards. Qualification for a scorecard is one decision, and admission to a programme is another. Save the official paper code, category, marks, score and any published rank together.
If you plan a new attempt, examine whether incorrect decisions arose in the subject content or the question format. Rework a numerical response with clear units, or explain why a multiple-select item demanded careful evaluation of every statement. Check your corrections with unfamiliar problems.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GATE marks and GATE score?
Marks reflect the marking scheme and any session normalization; the GATE score is calculated using the published examination formula.
Which GATE questions lose marks for an incorrect answer?
Multiple-choice questions carry a specified deduction, while the multiple-select and numerical-answer formats use different marking rules.
Is there one qualifying mark for every paper?
The qualifying threshold is specific to the test paper and the candidate category.
How long is a GATE scorecard valid?
The official examination website specifies a three-year validity period for its scorecards.
