Spain PAU Scores: Exam, Access and Admission Grades

Spain's university access examination is often called PAU, EBAU or EvAU. The published result can contain an exam average, a university access grade and a separate admission grade for each course. Understanding these distinct calculations helps you use the right number for each application decision.

Three figures, three different uses

Spain’s PAU provides a route from upper-secondary education to university study. On a results report, the test grade describes examination performance, the calificación de acceso establishes access eligibility, and the nota de admisión determines how an application is assessed for a particular degree. See the PAU exam guide for the assessment structure. To understand the score, first label these results separately instead of treating them as interchangeable measures.

Calculating the examination and access grades

Under the Spanish state regulation, each required exercise is marked from 0 to 10 with 2 decimal places. Their arithmetic average produces the PAU examination grade, also on a 0–10 scale but reported with 3 decimal places. The exam grade must reach 4 before it can contribute to the university-access calculation. Keep the individual subject marks: the average conceals differences that may become important in degree selection.

The same regulation assigns 60% of the access grade to the Bachillerato school average and 40% to the PAU grade. The weighted outcome must reach 5 for access. Two candidates with identical examination averages can therefore receive different access grades when their school averages differ. Check both inputs before calculating the result, and use the rounding prescribed by the regulation.

Why admission depends on the chosen degree

The official decree gives universities a further role in applying subject weightings to admission. The admission grade is stated with 3 decimal places, and the most favourable eligible subject marks are considered according to published programme rules. One candidate can consequently have different admission grades for different degree choices. This is a feature of the application process, rather than an inconsistency in the score report.

When comparing previous entry results, match the university, degree, year and quota category. Historical published cutoffs help you understand past competition, while the current university weighting table determines your application calculation. Retain copies of both the original score report and the programme-specific criteria.

How long the grades remain valid

The Spanish regulation distinguishes access and admission validity. The certified university access grade remains valid indefinitely, but the subject results used to improve the programme-specific admission grade are normally valid for the academic year beginning after the exam and the following 2 academic years. Before reusing older subject marks, check the university’s current admission rules and your examination year.

Use the breakdown to prepare

If you plan another sitting, rank the compulsory subjects by your actual practice errors and identify optional subjects that may receive advantageous weightings in your intended courses. Keep school grades, examination results and admissions calculations in separate notes.
