Polish Matura Scores: Percentages, Centiles and Passing
Poland's Matura certificate displays subject results in different forms. Written-examination percentages indicate achieved marks, centiles place them among other candidates, and oral results follow their own reporting convention. The conditions for receiving the diploma and the grades relevant to a university application serve different purposes.

Percent and centile answer different questions
The Polish Matura is the school-leaving examination used for qualification and frequently for entry to universities. The official certificate reports results subject by subject. Its percentage tells you how much of the available assessment was achieved; its centile places that result in the distribution of candidates taking the same examination. The Matura preparation guide discusses subject choices, while here you can focus on reading the result correctly.
The Central Examination Board publishes percentages and centiles for written papers, while oral examinations are reported as percentages. A higher centile reflects stronger relative standing in the comparison group. It contributes context, whereas admissions formulas usually use the precise subject results requested by the university.
Which conditions award the qualification?
For the current formula, CKE’s official examination explanation generally requires at least 30% in each compulsory written and oral examination and participation in an additional subject examination, subject to the specified exceptions. Check each required subject individually. For sittings before the 2028 rule change, the extra subject’s score itself serves university selection rather than the diploma pass decision; participation fulfils that part of the requirement, subject to the official exemptions. A strong mark in a favourite subject describes an achievement, while the prescribed minima apply separately across the necessary examinations.
The rules also change by cohort. The CKE notice describes a specific additional-subject exemption for some holders of technician-level vocational qualifications in 2027. From 2028, the rules require at least 30% in an appropriate advanced-level additional subject. Check the year and route printed in your own examination documents before drawing a conclusion.
Admissions priorities can differ
Universities may select particular subject combinations and advanced-level results for admission. A centile alone tells you little about how a department will rank applicants. For each intended degree, take the current published calculation and apply it to the relevant certified percentages. Keep any historic acceptance information separately from the admissions formula currently in force.
If the certificate seems inconsistent, inspect the subject, level and mode of examination before comparing it with friends’ reports. Retain official records, particularly if you need to demonstrate the result to an institution abroad that uses another grading tradition.
Plan revision from individual subjects
Build a review schedule around the required paper in which you have the greatest gap from your target. For written responses, distinguish missing facts from misunderstood instructions; for oral work, practise constructing complete and clear answers under realistic conditions.

Which result should I use for university admission?
Consult the current course's admissions formula and use the relevant subject results recorded on the official certificate.
