Zhongkao score totals vary by city
Zhongkao uses city-specific score scales. Local education authorities decide which subjects count toward upper-secondary admission, how totals are assembled and how applications are processed. Beijing and Shanghai provide contrasting examples. Interpret your mark, district position and school preferences with the rules of your own city.

The name Zhongkao refers to local examination and admission arrangements for the next stage of schooling in China. The Zhongkao study overview introduces the curriculum and examination. Once results arrive, the important first step is to identify the municipality or region that calculated them. A higher total elsewhere can reflect a different local scoring system.
Two cities, different totals
Beijing’s official 2026 admissions explanation sets a total of 510 points. Chinese, Mathematics and Foreign Language contribute 100 each; Morality and Rule of Law and Physics contribute 80 each; Physical Education and Health contributes 50. These are components of Beijing’s published admission score and should be read using the relevant local rules.
Shanghai’s upper-secondary admissions policy for 2026 instead provides a 750-point total that also includes history and comprehensive testing. Each total calls for interpretation according to its own local rules. They reflect different subject coverage, arrangements and local admission systems. Use the rulebook for the city where you are applying.
Why district position can matter
A candidate’s total is one indicator; the distribution of eligible candidates is another. Beijing’s district score-band publication lets eligible candidates see how many others fall into local score bands. Read the covered population carefully: special admission pathways and eligibility rules can place some students outside the population covered by a particular table.
Upper-secondary school applications also involve published admission batches and preference choices. Previous school admission scores offer historical context while future entry conditions depend on the new cohort. District policies, school plans, subject requirements and the distribution of applicants can all change. Note exactly which category and school type each example relates to before drawing a conclusion.
Turning the result into a useful review
Keep subject marks separate, especially where practical, spoken or ongoing assessment is included. A weaker mathematics result could reflect misreading questions, incomplete methods or calculation mistakes. A reading result may point to problems with interpreting supporting details or identifying the author’s main point. These observations help you choose a concrete improvement task instead of chasing a meaningless nationwide score.
