Matric Study Plan: Turn NSC Revision Into Clear Tasks
Exam dates from official calendars, together in one place.
Organise your matric revision around the subjects you are taking and the time available alongside schoolwork. Choose a topic, attempt suitable practice and use checking to identify your next task. For English-medium preparation, keep the relevant subject materials together and practise explaining the reasoning behind your answers.

Subjects
- General study
- Practice tests
Give your next revision session a clear task. Explain a subject concept, work through suitable practice and inspect how you reached your answer. Keep the useful correction close to the work so it can guide your next activity.
Connect your subjects with useful materials
DBE identifies the National Senior Certificate examinations as matric. Organise your preparation around the subjects you are taking. Put lessons, school tasks and regular commitments into your diary before adding focused revision.
DBE provides links to past papers. Use relevant materials to select an activity that fits the topic you want to revisit. Keep time for checking when you place the task in your week.
Mind the Gap study guides are also linked from the DBE examination resources. Keep the relevant guide beside your subject notes and use it to revisit the explanation you found difficult.
The DBE paper index lists English Mathematics materials. For English-medium maths preparation, practise explaining why a method fits as well as completing the calculation. Keep the information, units and reasoning visible in your working.
Make each subject session active
For reading or writing practice, identify what the task asks you to explain. Support your response with relevant detail from the material you are using. After checking, name the connection you would strengthen and apply it to a fresh activity.
For maths, write what you need to find before choosing an operation. Show how each step connects to the information given. Keep your original working beside the checked approach and revisit the step that needs attention.
For another subject, explain a concept from memory and compare it with your materials. Apply the corrected explanation to suitable practice. Choose the next task around the difficulty you found in your own work.
Turn checking into a follow-up
Keep your correction specific. “Explain why this method fits” gives maths practice a starting action. “Connect this detail to my point” gives a written response a purpose. Use a fresh task to apply the action and inspect the part you wanted to improve.
At the end of the week, look at completed activities across your subjects. Put the most useful follow-ups into realistic diary slots and prepare the relevant materials beside each one.
Sample 12-week plan
Weeks 1–4: establish subject sessions
Plan 4 weekday blocks of 40 minutes and a 75-minute weekend session. Rotate reading or writing activities, maths and concepts from your other chosen subjects. Include checking within each block.
Weeks 5–8: apply earlier corrections
Begin with 10 minutes on a difficult reading connection, mathematical step or subject concept. Follow with fresh practice and analysis. Keep your remaining subjects active across the week.
Weeks 9–12: connect longer practice and analysis
Use the weekend for a longer suitable subject activity. Give its analysis a weekday slot and choose the next reading, maths or recall task from what you find.
The final 4–8 weeks
Prioritise the reading, maths and subject follow-ups your own attempts reveal. Keep a 30-minute reserve block around school commitments and pair each practice task with checking.

Frequently asked questions
How can I organise matric revision?
Give each of your subjects a place in the week. Choose a topic and suitable practice for a focused block, inspect your reasoning and use the result to plan a specific follow-up.
How can I make maths practice useful?
State what you need to find, show why your method fits and keep your original working. After checking, attempt fresh practice using the step you wanted to strengthen.
How should I fit revision around school?
Put lessons and school commitments in your diary first. Add focused study blocks, keep a smaller recall activity for crowded days and reserve a slot for work that needs another attempt.
How can ExamLuma support my routine?
Choose your current exam focus, set a daily study-time goal and run focus sessions for specific activities. Save completed study blocks and use weekly statistics to adjust your next week.
