multistage adaptive testing: SAT Module Routing

Multistage adaptive testing is the assessment design used on the SAT in which each section routes you to a second module based on your overall performance across the first module. Because routing occurs at the module boundary rather than after individual questions, you can move freely among questions, flag items, and manage time within your active module.

In College Board’s test structure documentation, multistage adaptive testing is the delivery method on the digital SAT in which each section adapts at the transition between its opening and closing stages. You begin a section with a first module containing a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions; once that stage ends, the system selects a second module targeted to your first-stage performance.

Because routing is decided by the entire opening stage rather than after each single response, you have full freedom to navigate within your active stage. If an algebra problem or reading passage takes extra time during practice, flag the item, finish the rest of the stage accurately, and return to the flagged item before the stage timer finishes. This approach protects your accuracy across the full stage while keeping your pacing calm.

Frequently asked questions

When does the SAT adjust question difficulty?

Adaptation happens once per section at the transition between the first module and the second module, based on your combined performance in the opening module.

Can I skip a tough question and come back to it in the same module?

Yes, because routing occurs at the module level, you can flag any question and return to it at any point before that module's timer ends.

Does my Reading and Writing performance affect my Math routing?

Each section adapts independently, so your first Math module alone determines which second Math module you receive.
