PSAT/NMSQT and SAT: What’s the Difference?

The PSAT/NMSQT is the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It measures skills you will use on the SAT and serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The SAT is a separate test that colleges may consider when reviewing applications.

Last updated:

The PSAT/NMSQT is a school assessment that measures skills also tested on the SAT and serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The two tests share a score scale, but they are designed for students at different stages of high school.

Suppose your PSAT/NMSQT score report shows that algebra is a strength and geometry needs work. You can use that information to choose practice questions before you take the SAT. If a college later asks you to report your SAT score, use the score from the SAT you took. For National Merit entry requirements, consult the rules published by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
