The TOEFL iBT overall score is the rounded average of your Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking scores. Each section and the overall result use the same band scale. During the transition to the current scale, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the earlier scale.

Last updated:

The TOEFL iBT overall score summarises your performance across the sections of the TOEFL iBT. On the current 1–6 scale, ETS averages the section scores and rounds to the nearest half band. For example, a mean of 5.25 gives an overall score of 5.5. During the transition, the report also includes a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale. See the ETS score guide.

Imagine you are filling out an exchange application. The form asks for both your overall score and your Speaking score. Before typing either number, check which scale the form names. The comparison figure on your report applies to the overall result.
