How to read CET English test scores
China's College English Test reports converted, norm-referenced scores rather than the raw percentage of answers you got right. The national examination service leaves pass requirements to receiving institutions. Understanding the score report also means checking the test level and special reporting cases before comparing results with a university's requirements.

When you receive your Chinese College English Test result, identify which CET level it comes from before comparing it with another score. The CET exam overview explains test content; the score report requires understanding how the original work is converted to a reported result. Keeping the level and report type beside the score prevents common misunderstandings when applying for courses or qualifications.
The reported total is a statistical score
The National Education Examinations Authority’s score explanation states that CET-4 and CET-6 written examinations use a 710-point reported total. Each level has its own reference group. Responses are first equated across forms, then converted using a norm-referenced reporting method. Your final number expresses performance on the reported statistical scale rather than a raw percentage.
A norm-referenced result puts performance into a statistical context built from a specified comparison population. This matters if you are using practice papers: the raw marks or percentages from a practice session are suitable for reviewing errors, and official conversion requires more than a simple fixed multiplier. Keep these two sorts of information in different columns.
Who sets the score requirements?
The same official score policy says there is a national reporting scale while institutions set their own pass requirements. A university might still require a particular reported score for one of its own purposes, such as an internal academic requirement. Such a condition belongs to the university’s policy, and depends on the receiving institution’s programme. Check whether the requirement refers to CET-4 or CET-6 and whether any additional proof is needed.
Another distinction concerns the results enquiry service. The official CET FAQ says a written result below 220 can appear as 0 on the enquiry system; absence, misconduct and an omitted barcode are also possible explanations of a reported zero. It would be wrong to assume that every zero means the candidate answered nothing correctly. Use the official enquiry information and correction procedure for your case.
Use sections to plan a realistic improvement
Keep listening, reading, writing and translation practice separate when reviewing a paper. If reading errors cluster around inferred meaning, target that skill rather than increasing all practice equally. In listening, work out whether the difficulty involved catching the main point or recognising a change in position. The reported total can help you track a broad outcome while practice notes locate the cause.
