Pakistan CSS Written Marks, Viva and Merit Rules
Pakistan's Central Superior Services competitive examination has written, medical, psychological and interview stages. The written result contains compulsory and optional papers with distinct qualifying requirements. Candidates who progress face a viva voce, and allocation follows the Commission's declared rules. Read each score alongside its stage and the minimum conditions that apply.

CSS results should be read in the order of the Federal Public Service Commission’s selection stages. The written examination has subject-level qualifying rules; later stages include assessment and an interview. The CSS exam overview covers preparation topics. This page explains how a candidate can interpret written marks, pass requirements and the role of the viva voce.
Understand the written mark total
The FPSC competitive examination rules provide 1200 written marks, divided into 600 compulsory marks and 600 optional marks. These groups assess different subjects, and a candidate’s performance across them determines the written-stage result under the published rules. Store the compulsory and optional paper results separately before considering the overall total.
A strong answer in an optional subject and a strong answer in a compulsory subject each have a different place in your preparation strategy. Read the scoring criteria for the specific paper and review how effectively you addressed the question. For an essay, examine the main argument and supporting detail; for a subject paper, check the reasoning, factual support and coverage of the requested material.
Passing involves several separate thresholds
The FPSC written-qualification rules require at least 40% in each compulsory subject, 33% in each optional subject and 50% across the total written examination. These requirements operate together. A candidate can have a respectable aggregate while a particular subject still needs attention under the rules.
When reviewing practice answers, note which subject falls closest to its own minimum. The result will be more useful when you distinguish a missing factual point from a weak explanation or an incomplete response to a multi-part question. Make each follow-up task specific enough to rehearse on a different question.
Viva voce and final merit
Under the FPSC selection rules, the viva voce has 300 marks, and candidates need at least 100 in that stage. Written qualification is followed by the other prescribed steps, including medical and psychological assessment. Final merit and allocation consequently require more than a written score.
The FPSC’s examination notice supplies instructions for the relevant examination cycle. Use the notice’s stage and candidate conditions to interpret your result. An earlier year’s allocation belongs to a different applicant pool and should be kept as historical comparison.
Use the results to guide a new attempt
Select the paper whose feedback reveals a repeated weakness. For Current Affairs, test whether an argument supports its claims; for General Science, verify the mechanism behind an explanation; for Essay, review structure and relevance. Revisit the same skill with a new prompt to check improvement.
