UPSC Civil Services Marks and Merit Stages
The Union Public Service Commission uses a screening examination followed by written Main papers and an interview for Civil Services selection. Preliminary scores determine progression, while qualifying language papers have their own standard. Your final rank is based on the specified Main written and personality-test marks, alongside eligibility and category rules.

UPSC Civil Services results belong to a selection process with several distinct decisions. Your Preliminary result determines progression to the Main examination. The Main written examination has merit-counting papers and qualifying language requirements, followed by a Personality Test. The UPSC exam guide explains how to prepare; this page clarifies which score belongs to each selection stage.
Read Preliminary scores as a screening result
The Union Public Service Commission’s examination explanation describes two compulsory Preliminary papers of 200 marks each. General Studies Paper II is a qualifying paper, with a minimum of 33%. The other paper supports screening according to the cutoff the Commission announces for the relevant examination. These are distinct conditions, so keep your General Studies results under separate headings.
For objective questions, the UPSC marking rules deduct one-third of the marks assigned to a wrong answer; an unanswered question attracts zero penalty. When checking a practice attempt, track mistakes by subject and distinguish a deliberate omission from a wrong choice. That record helps you improve your judgement about when to attempt an uncertain item.
The official Civil Services Preliminary examination page publishes the examination notice and results for the relevant stage. Read the category and stage associated with any listed cutoff before drawing conclusions from a previous year.
Separate qualifying papers from merit papers
The UPSC’s Main scheme identifies merit-counting written papers totaling 1750 marks. The qualifying Indian Language and English papers are each 300 marks, with a 25% qualifying standard under the Commission’s rules. Satisfying the language requirements allows the designated Main written marks to enter merit consideration, subject to the Commission’s further rules.
This structure matters when you review a score breakdown. A high mark in an essay or General Studies paper belongs to the merit total. A qualifying language-paper result serves an eligibility function. Store the actual paper names and scoring categories as they appear on the UPSC publication.
How the interview enters final merit
The UPSC selection procedure assigns 275 marks to the Personality Test. Final ranking combines the specified Main merit papers and the Personality Test, while services are allotted under rank, preferences and applicable rules. A Preliminary cutoff from another year is useful as historical context for screening and belongs outside a final-merit calculation.
For preparation, review Main written answers for the clarity of an argument, relevance to the question and supporting facts. Use Preliminary practice to identify the first conceptual or elimination mistake. Different stages benefit from different feedback.
