Score explainers

Pre Saber Results: Percentiles and Performance Levels

Pre Saber is a practice-oriented assessment used in Colombia before the main secondary-school examination. Its results help students identify relative strengths through subject percentiles and performance levels. Read the comparison population carefully and use the detailed feedback to plan study, rather than substituting another examination's scoring formula.

Use the report for diagnosis

Pre Saber is a Colombian assessment intended to give students information ahead of the main secondary-school examination. It is valuable as a progress check because it explains relative strengths and learning needs. The Pre Saber examination guide introduces its context. When reading results, focus on the percentile and achievement information provided by the examining body rather than importing the numerical formula of another test.

How the percentile comparison works

Under the Icfes results regulation, Pre Saber covers 5 test areas aligned with those of Saber 11. The individual result provides a percentile for each area and an overall percentile, using the population that sat Saber 11 as a reference. A percentile describes where the candidate stands relative to that group. Its interpretation depends on the assessed subject and the defined reference population.

Because percentiles are comparative measures, a small difference between two subjects can reflect different score distributions. Keep the subject name and relevant comparison group with every percentile you note. The stronger subject can serve as reassurance, while the weaker one helps choose the next topic to revise.

Performance levels add meaning

The official Icfes methodology also provides a performance level for each Pre Saber test. These levels describe the kinds of tasks associated with the demonstrated result. A high relative position tells you where the candidate stands among peers; the level description is a more direct guide to which academic skills are developed and which need more attention.

The same Icfes regulation defines the 0–500 global-score calculation for Saber 11 separately from the Pre Saber percentile report. Keep these reporting schemes distinct if you later compare an official secondary-school examination result with an earlier preparatory assessment.

Turning feedback into a study sequence

Start with the weakest performance-level description, then look at mistakes on representative practice tasks. In reading, identify misunderstood inferences; in mathematics, trace whether an error came from interpreting the question or applying the method. In science, review how tables and graphs relate to conclusions. Repeat focused practice before another full assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Pre Saber percentile represent?

It compares the candidate's performance with the official reference population for the relevant assessment.

Do performance levels and percentiles measure the same thing?

Levels describe demonstrated capabilities, while percentiles give relative position in the reference group.

How should I use the result to prepare?

Prioritise subjects and competencies highlighted by the report, then review missed practice tasks.
