Italian Medicine Admission Scores: Open Semester Exams
Italian-language medicine admissions use an open-semester pathway with subject examinations and a national ranking. Each subject has its own result, and the ranking process also considers how the candidate meets the specified requirements. Distinguish these subject marks from the separate English-language medical admission test when planning your next steps.

Identify the subject scores on your record
Italy’s Italian-language medicine entrance pathway uses examinations taken during an open semester. The result is best understood as several subject assessments feeding into a national process, rather than one medical admission test mark. The Italian medicine admission guide describes the route itself. When reviewing the outcome, record the grade for Physics, Chemistry with preparatory biochemistry, and Biology separately before looking at the ranking rules.
How the individual examinations are marked
The Ministry of Universities and Research decree sets 31 questions per subject: 10 completion items and 21 multiple-choice items. A correct answer adds 1 point, an incorrect answer deducts 0.1 points, and an unanswered item receives 0 points. The final subject grade is expressed out of 30, with the possibility of honours under the applicable rules.
That means a mock-exam question count should be treated as a record of practice rather than the entire certified grade. Review your errors by subject: a weak chemistry result may call for different revisions than a physics mark affected by calculation mistakes. Preserve each subject’s final official mark, particularly when comparing later attempts or ranking information.
Subject passes and the national selection order
The official regulation sets a passing mark of 18/30 for each subject. Its national ranking contains 3 sections, based on whether candidates meet requirements in 3, at least 2 or 1 of the subject examinations. The rules also determine how attempts are considered. These distinctions mean two candidates’ totals can have different procedural implications depending on the pattern of passing subjects.
Consult the ministry’s actual ranking notice together with your transcript. A satisfactory result in an individual subject marks progress in the route, while the full outcome follows the placement regulations, eligibility and available positions. Keep this pathway distinct from admissions to English-taught medicine, which uses a separate examination framework.
Use each subject result to prioritise study
Read the gap between the subject marks before planning another attempt. Identify topics where mistakes repeatedly arise, then practise those topics under realistic time limits. Compare answers to the official syllabus and assessment instructions; focus on understanding why an answer went wrong rather than chasing an unofficial overall threshold.
