Chile PAES Scores: Test Scale and Weighted Admission

Chile's PAES results include individual examination scores and may be read alongside school-record factors called NEM and Ranking. The admissions value for a degree depends on how that programme weights the available factors. Learn to keep the test result, school-record indicators and course-specific weighted score distinct.

Separate the test mark and the admission calculation

PAES is a major route into participating Chilean universities. A candidate can receive an official result for each examination and see school-related factors in the admissions system. The PAES preparation guide covers subjects and test arrangements. When you interpret the outcome, distinguish each test’s score from the weighted value that a particular degree will use to compare applicants.

The DEMRE official results service reports PAES test marks on a 100–1000 scale. The score belongs to a particular examination, so preserve the name of the test alongside the number. A score for Mathematics and a score for a reading assessment are separate results even when their reported scales are the same.

School marks and selection factors

The official DEMRE portal also shows the NEM and Ranking factors when applicable. NEM relates to the student’s secondary-school marks, while Ranking captures a particular school-performance comparison under the admissions system. They are distinct from a PAES test mark. For an accurate record, list the school factors and the examination marks as separate entries.

The DEMRE explanation of selection factors says universities publish the factors and weights applicable to each degree. Those weightings produce the course-specific admission score. Your own scores remain the same across applications, yet the calculated admissions value can change as the programme and its weightings change.

What to compare before applying

Start with the current admissions table for each intended university and degree. Check which tests are compulsory, which optional score may be considered and how the school factors contribute. Record the weighted result for each course separately. Historical entry figures describe earlier selection rounds, while the current programme requirements determine how an application will be considered.

If your score report seems inconsistent, compare it directly with the official DEMRE service and the particular assessment taken. Keep the relevant result notice and course requirements available for any university enquiry.

Use individual subjects for revision

For a future attempt, identify which subject could improve your competitiveness given the specific degree weights. Split missed practice questions into content gaps and time-management mistakes, and reassess those areas with realistic timed tasks. Track each exam type separately.
