MUET Band Scores, Components and CEFR Levels

The Malaysian University English Test reports the candidate's performance in listening, speaking, reading and writing on a shared component scale. The component marks are combined to determine the overall band. The Malaysian Examinations Council publishes the current band ranges and their indicative CEFR levels. Receiving universities set the language result required for their particular programmes.

MUET measures English-language performance across listening, speaking, reading and writing. Your score report combines the component marks into an aggregate and an overall band, which may then be compared with a university’s language requirement. Use the MUET exam guide for preparation tasks. Here, the focus is how the Malaysian Examinations Council organizes the official result.

Combine the component marks correctly

The Council’s current MUET specifications assign 25% of the aggregate to each of four components: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Each component has a maximum of 90 marks and the overall aggregate reaches 360 marks. This equal contribution differs from older examination specifications, so identify the current report version when comparing practice results.

Reading the four values separately gives you more useful information than looking only at the total. A candidate whose writing performance trails reading may need practice with argument structure and tone; one with a weaker listening component may need to track meaning across longer passages. Retain the skill label beside its mark when deciding what to improve.

Read the total against the band ranges

The official MUET band table places 331–360 in Band 5+, 294–330 in Band 5, 258–293 in Band 4.5, 211–257 in Band 4 and 164–210 in Band 3.5. These intervals classify different levels of performance within the aggregate scale.

The same official table continues with 123–163 for Band 3, 82–122 for Band 2.5, 36–81 for Band 2 and 1–35 for Band 1. Use the published range corresponding to the actual aggregate printed on your report; a band is a reported proficiency classification rather than an additional test-section score.

CEFR and receiving institution requirements

The MUET CEFR alignment associates Band 5+ with C1+, Band 5 with C1, Bands 4.5 and 4 with B2, Bands 3.5 and 3 with B1, and Bands 2.5, 2 and 1 with A2. These descriptors help explain the level of language performance represented by a result. The exact band demanded for entry is set by each course or receiving organization.

The Council’s rules require candidates to complete all four components for an overall result and certificate. Keep the official component status and examination record together when preparing a university application.

The Council’s official validity policy states that MUET results issued from 2009 onward are valid for five years from the issue date. Check the issue date on your result before using it in a university application, alongside the institution’s programme-specific requirements.

Use practice to develop the skill that most affects your target band. For speaking, build clear answers to unfamiliar prompts; for writing, organize an argument around supporting details; for reading and listening, identify the textual support for an inference.
