STPM Grade Points, Full Pass and Cumulative GPA
Malaysia's STPM results report grades and grade points for individual subjects, alongside a cumulative grade point average under the Malaysian Examinations Council's published scheme. Full passes and partial passes occupy different grade ranges. The cumulative result draws on selected subjects including General Studies, with special reporting rules for missing or invalid grades.

An STPM score report includes subject grades and values that help you assess academic achievement, while the cumulative grade point average is a separate summary. Malaysia’s Examinations Council specifies the grade-to-point mapping and the rules for what counts toward the overall result. The STPM exam guide introduces the study route; this page explains the official grades and what their values mean.
From subject letters to grade points
The Malaysian Examinations Council’s STPM scheme assigns A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33 and C = 2.00. The remaining grade points are C- = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00 and F = 0.00. Keep the grade and its numerical value together, so the subject result remains clear when interpreting the cumulative figure.
The same official grading table classifies C through A (2.00–4.00) as a full pass, D through C- (1.00–1.67) as a partial pass, and F (0.00) as a failed result. This distinction matters because receiving programmes can specify particular subject achievement even when the overall grade point average looks competitive.
How the cumulative figure is assembled
The STPM examination rules describe the cumulative grade point average, called PNGK, as the average of the four best eligible subjects including General Studies (Pengajian Am). The subject selection must follow the admissions procedure. Record which subjects were included and use the value printed by the examination authority when preparing an application.
The Council also specifies cases where a cumulative result is unavailable because of particular administrative codes. According to the published STPM rules, affected combinations of W, X, Y or Z result codes can prevent PNGK from appearing. Such a code requires an explanation from the official result record rather than a guessed average.
Use the result for an admission decision
The Council’s current regulations index distinguishes the applicable STPM scheme by the examination cycle. Keep that version with your results because the receiving institution’s entry conditions refer to particular subject requirements and admissions routes. A cumulative average supports comparison, while a required subject grade can be decisive for the exact course.
If you plan further study, identify a skill that reduced your subject performance. In Mathematics, revisit the reasoning behind a calculation; in a language paper, identify the key part of a text; in a science subject, practise applying a concept to a new scenario. Choose your next session from the weakest repeatable task.
