TestDaF scores and TDN levels by section
A TestDaF certificate reports reading, listening, writing and speaking separately. The digital exam first converts each section to a point scale and then assigns a TestDaF level, while the paper format uses form-specific statistical thresholds. Read the four skill results individually and compare them with the exact language profile published by your target institution.

A TestDaF result is a language profile rather than a single verdict. The TestDaF exam overview explains the assessment; here the goal is to read the certificate accurately. Keep reading, listening, writing and speaking separate, because a university may describe its language requirement as a combination of skill levels rather than one total.
Read the digital point scale before the TDN label
The digital TestDaF evaluation page converts every section to 0–20 points. In each section, 0–4 is below TDN 3, 5–9 maps to TDN 3, 10–15 maps to TDN 4, and 16–20 maps to TDN 5. The page can display an arithmetic sum from 0–80, but the official interpretation remains based on the four section results.
The digital TestDaF evaluation page maps every skill to below TDN 3, TDN 3, TDN 4 or TDN 5. The official results FAQ keeps reading, listening, writing and speaking as four separate result lines. Read every line exactly as shown, including a result below TDN 3, because each institutional skill requirement keeps its own role.
Use the form-specific paper evaluation
For paper-based Reading and Listening, the official evaluation explanation recalculates the minimum correct-answer counts for each test set through statistical analysis. Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained raters against published criteria. Use the official result as the conversion reference rather than a remembered universal cutoff.
Compare your profile with the exact institutional wording
A target institution may ask for the same level in all skills, allow a stated combination or apply a rule specific to a course. Copy the requirement into your application notes, preserve the distinction between the digital points and the TDN label, and check the institution’s current page. Avoid reducing the certificate to the arithmetic total when the published condition refers to individual sections.
The official results FAQ now permits a combined digital certificate that selects the best section results from tests taken within a maximum of 6 months. The receiving university or institution decides whether it recognizes that combined certificate, so keep the exact policy beside the program in your application notes. The same FAQ gives the TestDaF certificate unlimited validity. An institution can still publish a recency rule, so record both the certificate date and the current institutional wording.
For study planning, choose the weakest repeatable action. In reading, that may be tracking argument structure; in listening, updating notes when a speaker changes direction; in writing, organizing a response around the task; in speaking, developing an answer and responding to a prompt. Test the same action in new material before increasing the length of a simulation.

Frequently asked questions
Does TestDaF give one overall TDN result?
The official certificate reports the four skill sections separately. Universities can therefore describe a required profile across the individual skills.
Can I use one fixed cutoff for paper-based reading and listening?
Those two sections use test-set-specific statistical thresholds. Writing and speaking are rated against published criteria.
How should I plan after receiving the result?
Choose the skill with the clearest recurring decision error, practise it with new material and keep shorter review contact with the other skills.
