GMAT score scale and section guide

The current GMAT report combines performance across three equally weighted sections while also showing each section separately. Read the official total scale, keep the section results distinct and use the percentile context supplied with the report. Then check each business school’s current policy and build the next practice block around the decision that limited your performance.

Your GMAT result contains a total score and a section profile. The GMAT exam overview covers the test experience; this score page helps you interpret the official numbers while preserving the published scoring model. Start with the reported total, then inspect the three section results to decide which reasoning process deserves the next focused session.

The official GMAT score page states that the current total is based on all 3 sections, weighted equally. The total scale is 205–805, reported in 10-point intervals, and each total ends in 5. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights each use a 60–90 scale in 1-point intervals. The same page gives a score-validity period of 5 years from the test date. Keep the test date and the official values together in the application record.

GMAC’s edition-comparison guidance places the current total on 205–805 and the GMAT Exam (10th Edition) total on 200–800. The editions use different scales, so compare reports through the official guidance and percentile context rather than by matching similar-looking totals.

The total gives a compact view of performance across the exam, while the section results show where the profile is uneven. A similar total can come from different section combinations, so use the total and section profile together. Review the section in which your method was least reliable and identify the first step that broke down: interpreting a condition, selecting support, organizing information or maintaining accuracy under time pressure.

Treat percentiles and school policies as separate context

The official GMAT score page explains that percentiles are updated annually, so a scaled score can remain the same while its percentile context moves. Record the reference period with the percentile and keep the school’s published admissions wording beside it. Business schools decide how submitted results fit into the rest of the application.

The official GMAT score page states that a Superscore is calculated automatically from the highest eligible section results across valid attempts. The official Superscore FAQ explains that the percentile field is unavailable, each school decides whether to use the Superscore, and an available Superscore is included automatically when a single-attempt Official School Score Report is sent. Its inclusion is mandatory for the test taker. Keep the single-administration result, Superscore and school policy as separate entries.

Convert a section result into a study task

For Quantitative Reasoning, separate conceptual misunderstanding from algebraic execution and careless reading. For Verbal Reasoning, distinguish weak support selection from passage structure or argument analysis. For Data Insights, note whether the difficulty came from integrating sources, reading a display or deciding which information mattered. One precise error category creates a better follow-up than simply scheduling another full exam.

Close the review with a fresh problem that requires the same decision but changes the surface details. If the method transfers, move the topic to spaced review. If it fails again, narrow the practice further before taking another long simulation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate the GMAT total by adding section scores?

The official reported total is the reference. Keep the three section results as separate diagnostic information for study planning.

Why should I review section results if schools receive the total?

The sections show where your reasoning process is strongest or least stable. They help you choose targeted practice even when an institution emphasizes the total.

How should I compare GMAT attempts?

Use the official report, note the applicable score policy and compare like with like. Keep the date and program policy in your own application tracker.
