TOEFL ITP scaled scores for both test levels

TOEFL ITP tests report scaled listening, language structure and reading results. The two test levels cover different proficiency ranges and therefore have different section and total scores. The examining body converts raw correct answers through statistical equating, and receiving institutions decide which reported marks meet their own language requirements.

TOEFL ITP is used by institutions to assess English-language proficiency in academic settings. The TOEFL ITP exam overview explains the test format. To read a score report, begin with the test level and the sections reported: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. Keeping those labels with the result helps identify both the broad language profile and the level measured.

Each level has its own scaled range

The official ETS test-content table shows TOEFL ITP Level 1 section ranges of 31–68 for Listening, 31–68 for Structure and 31–67 for Reading, with a total of 310–677. The variation between the section ranges makes it important to identify the section as well as the total.

For Level 2, ETS reports a different section scale of 20–50 and total of 200–500 in the same official table. This level targets a different part of the proficiency continuum. Preserve the test level beside every score when comparing certificates, especially if your institution accepts results from several assessment types.

How correct responses become reported scores

The official ETS Test Taker Handbook describes the statistical conversion of correct-answer totals into equated scaled section scores. To obtain the overall result, ETS adds the three scaled scores and multiplies the sum by 10/3. The preliminary correct-answer count reflects only successfully answered tasks under the published score rule, so it is valuable to attempt items when preparation and test instructions permit.

The scaled result is a different measure from an informal practice-paper count. Equating helps scores carry a consistent interpretation across test forms. Practice tallies remain useful for identifying learning needs: if listening errors relate to following a speaker’s conclusion, work on that skill; if structure errors centre on sentence relationships, focus on those patterns.

Check the institution’s score requirements

The ETS handbook makes clear that receiving institutions set the test level and reported score they find acceptable. A score that meets one programme’s requirement may serve a different purpose elsewhere. Confirm the exact test and reporting policy named by your university or employer rather than applying a generic admission threshold.

ETS also describes an official result validity period of 2 years on its ITP scoring page. Keep the certificate date with your score and verify the receiving institution’s document requirements when preparing an application.
