WACE Grades, ATAR Course Results and Scaling
The Western Australian Certificate of Education documents qualification completion and subject achievement. ATAR-course reports also distinguish school marks, moderated marks and examination contributions. Read the separate components first, then consult the tertiary admissions process for any rank used in university selection. Certificate achievement and admission ranking answer different questions.

A WACE results document carries several kinds of information. It records senior secondary achievement, and some students also receive a separate ATAR Course Report relevant to tertiary entry. Use the WACE exam overview for the programme structure; here, start with the exact label printed beside each official result.
Distinguish school achievement from course scores
According to Western Australia’s SCSA reporting guide, the achievement statement can show school grades and school marks. For eligible ATAR subjects, the course report additionally records moderated school marks, examination marks, combined scores and standardised combined scores. Each measure belongs to a specific reporting stage.
A course with practical assessment may show written and practical examination components separately, as the SCSA reporting document explains. Record both labels from your official statement. The practical component can point toward rehearsal tasks, while a written component can reveal opportunities to strengthen argument structure or calculations.
Read moderation and the course combination
In SCSA’s university entrance explanation, the ATAR-course combined score gives 50% weight to school assessment and 50% to the examination. The moderation guidance describes the statistical process used to place school marks on a comparable footing across schools.
For a careful comparison, keep your original school results alongside moderated results and the examination component. That makes it easier to see why a combined result can differ from a simple classroom average. Check the authority’s documentation for the treatment of a particular subject, especially when the examination includes practical elements.
Certification is a separate decision
For the current rules, SCSA’s WACE requirements include at least 20 units, including at least 10 Year 12 units. The ordinary achievement standard specifies 14 C grades or equivalents across Years 11 and 12, with at least 6 in Year 12. Breadth, depth, literacy and numeracy requirements also apply, so study the full qualification checklist.
The SCSA tertiary entrance note assigns ATAR ranking to TISC. Certificate completion and the rank used for university selection should therefore occupy different sections of your records. The receiving course also determines its own prerequisites.
Work from each assessed component
When one result is weaker, identify the assessed action it describes. A practical task may benefit from a more repeatable sequence; a written response may need stronger supporting details or tighter structure. Test the improvement with fresh material before the next timed attempt.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a WACE grade and an ATAR course mark?
A grade expresses achievement against a course standard. An ATAR-course result also uses assessed marks for comparison and university entry.
Why might the moderated school mark differ?
SCSA moderates school marks using external assessment information to improve comparability.
Are WACE completion and university ranking identical?
The award has its own qualification requirements, while TISC is responsible for admission ranking.
