YDS and e-YDS Language Scores and Proficiency Bands
Türkiye's Foreign Language Examination, YDS, and its electronic version, e-YDS, provide language test results used for institutional and academic requirements. The official scoring framework distinguishes the numeric result from letter proficiency bands. Applicants should check the assessed language, the appropriate examination form and the receiving institution's precise score and validity requirements.

YDS, the Foreign Language Examination administered by ÖSYM in Türkiye, and e-YDS, its electronic examination route, are often used to document language knowledge for academic or professional requirements. A result needs to be interpreted by its tested language, numeric score and the specific rule of the institution receiving it. The YDS and e-YDS overview helps you identify the examination format and relevant preparation areas.
How the multiple-choice score is formed
According to the ÖSYM YDS scoring guide, qualifying multiple-choice papers are assessed from correct responses and reported on a 100-point scale. Only correct responses contribute to the multiple-choice result in this evaluation method. If the examination authority cancels a question, it recalculates score values using the remaining valid questions, as described in the guide.
For languages assessed through a translation-format YDS paper rather than multiple-choice questions, the same ÖSYM guide sets out a separate method: candidates translate between Turkish and the tested language, and an ÖSYM-appointed jury evaluates the translation out of 100 points. The correct-answer method above applies to multiple-choice tests; your language’s stated format determines which procedure to use.
When analysing your own practice papers, distinguish question accuracy from the official converted result. Consider which vocabulary topics, grammar patterns and reading tasks produce repeated errors. A record of the actual mistakes can guide targeted revision more effectively than simply recording the final practice number.
Read the official proficiency bands
The official YDS guide specifies the following result bands: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69 and E 50–59. These letter designations are ÖSYM’s classifications for the result; the receiving university, employer or professional body sets its own minimum requirement for an application.
For example, an institution may ask for a numeric language result in a particular language instead of a general statement of proficiency. Read the original announcement, confirm the language, and compare its stated score requirement with the official result. Keep the examination’s name and candidate record available when submitting proof.
Understand the electronic route
The e-YDS guide published by ÖSYM describes the computer-administered multiple-choice format. Distinguish the way the examination is delivered from the way an application interprets a score. Your intended institution’s acceptance conditions should guide the choice of examination form.
To improve a result, review incorrect answers by skill: understanding a paragraph’s argument, recognising a grammatical relationship, choosing vocabulary in context, or managing reading pace. Return to the same task category with new material to see whether your reasoning became more reliable.
