VSTEP results: English levels and score bands

VSTEP English proficiency results use a reported overall score and an associated proficiency level. In the established VSTEP band system, the level depends on the final reported result of the examination rather than an independently assigned level for each skill. Institutions then decide which level and document satisfy their requirements.

A VSTEP result is used to describe English proficiency against Vietnam’s language assessment framework. The VSTEP examination overview introduces the language tasks; this guide focuses on the certificate’s score interpretation. Before comparing results, identify the examination format and the institution that issued the document. The level printed on your official record should be read alongside the underlying reported score.

Read the final score as a level band

The official ULIS-VNU VSTEP results table reports VSTEP.3-5 on a 10-point overall scale. Results from 0–3.5 fall below the level assignment threshold, 4.0–5.5 correspond to level 3, 6.0–8.0 to level 4, and 8.5–10 to level 5. The official table provides descriptions of language ability for each band. Read the final result as reported and use its corresponding band rather than assigning levels independently to each skill.

These bands are useful for understanding academic and professional language use. A band describes the kinds of texts and interactions a candidate can typically manage, ranging from familiar situations to more demanding specialised contexts. The level is a broad proficiency classification; your detailed performance still matters when planning another attempt.

Skill results help explain the overall outcome

The official VSTEP format description covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Someone who reads effectively but struggles with spontaneous spoken responses may need a very different revision plan from a student with balanced skills. Preserve your available skill details and connect each result to the kind of task you had difficulty performing.

For example, a listening challenge may concern following how a speaker qualifies a claim. In writing, the task might require organising an argument and choosing appropriate examples. In speaking, the issue could be maintaining a clear explanation through a discussion. These observations can guide practice even when the officially awarded overall level is unchanged.

Compare the certificate with the receiving institution

The ULIS-VNU level definitions establish the exam’s score classification. A particular university, employer or professional authority decides which level is required for its programme or purpose. Look at the exact qualification or document named in the receiving institution’s instructions, including any component-specific requirement. This separates a recognised examination score from a particular admission decision.

Keep your official results document with its test format and issuer identified. If several certificates are involved, compare their schemes through the receiving institution’s published policy rather than treating their numerical results as interchangeable.
