Vietnam graduation exam: scoring and eligibility

Vietnam's upper-secondary graduation decision combines subject examination marks and school performance under a national regulation. The subject scores, weighted school-year averages, additional recognised points and graduation result each have separate roles. Some candidates qualify through a full examination exemption route. Understanding the distinction helps you interpret the actual official graduation outcome.

Vietnam’s upper-secondary graduation examination produces subject results and a separate decision on recognition of graduation. The THPT examination guide covers examination preparation. When reading an official outcome, keep the mark for each subject, your school record and the calculated graduation-recognition mark in different places. Universities can apply their own admissions conditions to the eligible results.

Subject marks and the school record play different roles

Under the Vietnamese government’s consolidated THPT regulation, individual examination subjects use a 10-point scale and officially reported results are rounded to two decimal places. Each subject mark describes one tested area. The outcome used to decide graduation eligibility incorporates further information, including performance during the upper-secondary school years.

The same national regulation defines the school-year average using grade 10 weighted 1, grade 11 weighted 2 and grade 12 weighted 3, then dividing the sum by 6. This places greater weight on more recent academic performance. The calculation uses the officially recorded annual school averages, so a student should consult the school record rather than create an estimate from individual homework marks.

How the graduation calculation works

For the normal examination-based route, the government’s graduation formula begins with the average examination-subject mark and adds eligible encouragement points divided by 4. That component is added to the weighted school-year average, the combined amount is divided by 2, and applicable priority points are added. The final graduation result is rounded to two decimal places. The meaning of an encouragement or priority component depends on the eligibility category defined by the regulation.

Because the calculation has several inputs, a result from one subject can differ from the final recognition score. Verify which additional components the authorities officially accepted for your record. Store the result under its official label; avoid replacing the recorded outcome with a calculation from guessed incentives.

Who follows the minimum-mark rule

The graduation recognition article in the regulation says that candidates taking the examinations for graduation recognition must obtain more than 1.0 in every required examination subject on the 10-point scale and a graduation-recognition result of at least 5.0, alongside the other eligibility and disciplinary conditions. These conditions operate together for that examination route.

The full-exemption and recognition provisions also provide a separate route: eligible candidates exempted from all examinations under Article 39(1) can be recognised under Article 45(2). Their outcome follows the exemption provisions, rather than being judged by the marks of examinations they were exempted from taking. The exemption decision and the official recognition record are the important documents for those candidates.

Using the result in a university application

Graduation recognition confirms a school-leaving qualification. Universities can separately specify subject combinations and admission methods. Check the intended institution’s official admissions policy and preserve the exact subject marks it requests. For further study, review which academic tasks caused difficulties rather than trying to alter an official recognition decision through informal estimates.
