HSK Scores: Levels and the New-Version Transition

An HSK score report belongs to the level and version printed on it. Current level reports use different section layouts and published threshold rules. The announced new version requires separate treatment because its complete score scale is still awaiting official publication. Read the skill profile, total and receiving institution’s requirement together.

Use the HSK exam guide to plan preparation and this page to interpret the result issued for the test you took. Begin with the version and level printed on the report. Keep current-level scores and future new-version scores in separate columns, each paired with its own official instructions.

Read the sections before the total

For current HSK Level 1 and Level 2, the official reports show Listening, Reading and Total. The full score is 200 and the published passing score is 120. The Level 1 page and Level 2 page state the same scale. Read the two skill scores first: the total answers the threshold question, while the section pattern guides practice.

For current HSK Level 3 and Level 4, Writing joins Listening and Reading. The full score is 300 and the published passing score is 180. These figures appear on the official Level 3 page and Level 4 page. Keep the skill scores beside the total, since a passing result can still contain a clear priority for improvement.

Use only published pass marks

The current Level 5 and Level 6 pages show Listening, Reading, Writing and Total with a full score of 300. Their published information stops at the scale and score-report structure, leaving acceptance requirements to receiving institutions. Check the wording on the Level 5 page and Level 6 page. Record the university, employer or scholarship provider’s exact requirement beside the report.

The combined advanced examination follows another format. The HSK Levels 7–9 page reports Listening, Reading, Writing, Translation and Speaking, with every skill score ranging from 0 to 100. The overall rating is Below HSK Level 7, HSK Level 7, HSK Level 8 or HSK Level 9 and is based on IRT ability values. Read this as a skill profile and rating rather than a lower-level total.

A threshold published for a lower current level remains specific to that level. Preserve the level name, skill profile and receiving institution’s rule together. This method keeps a familiar number from gaining a broader meaning than the official page gives it.

Treat the new-version transition as a separate reporting question

Chinese Testing International has announced the worldwide launch of HSK 3.0 and said that further test information will be published later. The official launch notice leaves the complete new score table and universal passing thresholds pending. Keep current and new versions separate until CTI publishes the reporting details.

When a new report becomes available, use the version named on it and the official instructions linked to that administration. If an institution asks simply for “HSK,” request confirmation of the accepted report and level. Save the written response with your application notes.

Check validity and institutional use separately

Chinese Testing International states that an HSK score report is valid as proof of language proficiency for 2 years from the test date. The official result regulations provide that validity rule. A receiving institution may add its own document deadline, accepted level or recency condition, so verify both the report’s official validity and the application’s current requirements.

For study planning, identify one observable weakness behind the lowest skill result. A listening problem may involve detail, speaker intent or pace; a reading problem may involve reference, structure or vocabulary in context; writing may require better sentence control or task completion. Test one change on new material before taking another full practice set.

Frequently asked questions

Do all current HSK levels use the same passing rule?

The rules vary by level. Some official level pages publish a passing mark, while the higher current-level pages publish the total scale and leave acceptance requirements to receiving institutions.

Can I convert a current-level result directly to the announced new version?

Use a conversion only after Chinese Testing International publishes an official table. Until then, keep the versions in separate records.

Should I compare only the total score?

Read the skill results as well. They show whether listening, reading or writing is the clearest priority for your next practice cycle.

How should I check a university requirement?

Use the institution’s current admissions page and confirm the accepted level, report version, test date and any skill-specific condition.
