How to Read DELF and DALF Results
DELF and DALF results require two checks: the total threshold and the minimum for every examination. Most diplomas use four equally weighted tests, while the highest diploma combines skills into two larger examinations. Read the exact diploma level and all component results before sharing the lifelong qualification with an institution.

Read a DELF or DALF result for the exact diploma level you took. Begin with the total, then inspect every examination and the final decision. The diploma family uses two result layouts, and each layout needs its own reading method. The DELF and DALF exam guide covers preparation; this page explains how the official thresholds work and how to use the diploma in an application.
Check the total and every examination
France Éducation international’s central management manual applies the common layout used for DELF A1.1, A1, A2, B1 and B2 and DALF C1: four tests are each scored out of 25, the candidate needs at least 50/100 overall, and every test must reach at least 5/25. A score below 5/25 is eliminatory. The required minimum for every examination remains decisive even when the total is high.
Read the result in two passes. First check whether each test reaches its minimum. Then check the total. This order makes the separate conditions visible and prevents a strong skill from hiding a weak one. When you make a study plan, preserve the official test names and connect each low result to a specific action, such as locating support in listening, structuring a written response, or developing an oral argument.
Read the highest DALF diploma on its own scale
The official DALF C2 candidate manual uses two combined examinations worth 50 points each. The candidate needs at least 50/100 overall and at least 10/50 in each examination; a score below 10/50 is eliminatory. Keep these two fields separate from the four-test layout used for the other diplomas. Compare DALF C2 attempts with the same two examination fields and the same official thresholds.
Use the component profile to guide preparation while keeping the diploma level and official decision as the certification outcome. Practice scores, teacher estimates, and mock rubrics remain useful learning information; the official document carries the certified result.
Use the diploma for the right requirement
France Éducation international states that DELF and DALF diplomas are valid for life. The receiving university, employer, or authority may still require a particular level or a particular way of submitting proof. Match the exact diploma title to the current requirement and ask the institution when the wording is unclear. Avoid substituting a different test, an old application rule, or another person’s accepted document.

Frequently asked questions
Can a high total compensate for an eliminatory test result?
The overall threshold and the minimum for each examination must both be met for the diploma concerned.
Why is the highest DALF diploma read differently?
Its result is organised into two combined examinations with their own minimum, rather than the four-test layout used by the other diplomas.
Do DELF and DALF diplomas expire?
The diplomas are valid for life, although a receiving institution may still specify the level or document format it wants.
What should I compare between two attempts?
Compare attempts for the same diploma level and inspect the same tests, because the scoring structure changes at the highest level.
